Seasons

I haven’t been blogging regularly since last season. I realize that now. Life and work is no excuse for ignoring my calling, but I occasionally do have to attend these silly things called lectures and tutorials, which I feel have been misleading me into a world filled with outgrown weaves and bookworm bitches who glare at me as I strut through the isles of the library looking for… wait… oh I forgot what I was looking for. So in the spirit of Spring I think its time we  take a deep breath and realize that the frail brown ivy that hung on the buildings of Upper campus is now once again, beautifully green and creeping into summer. Although this may strike panic and anxiety due to the realization that you haven’t done much work (academic and soul searching) from the time Jammie Thursdays were still packed, this should spur you on to take charge and make things happen ‘for’ you instead of ‘to’ you. I have been lazy. Oh so very lazy. But that changes NOW! My post-Ramadan svelte self cannot go unnoticed; ya’ll know I staved myself for way too long!

So as Spring has officially sprung (forgetting the odd miserable rainy days in between) my look for this week is inspired by the clear skies and crisp morning air (in other words, I threw a whole lot of old shit together to create this look). I bought these denims at JayJay’s at the beginning of the year and one night after some academic slaving I grabbed a pair of scissors and ripped away. Ps. Youtube tutorials do help. I paired it with an Ashtray Electric T-shirt which was another victim to my state of scissor happiness. I layered a stripe T underneath to add a little peek-a-boo edge. My sandals were hand made by a leather artisan and they are my new summer go-to’s when I’ve had enough of flip flops. Being inspired to try new things this season, I decided to go lighter with my hair colour. When I started this blog I had a similar colour, except this time I said good-bye to the comfort zone bangs had created in my life. Step outside your crazy workload and just realize that the year is not over yet, we still have some time left to do the things we said we would do. If that doesn’t work, just call me and we can shop our sorrows away.

Thank-you to www.cicification.com for shooting these photographs after a long day of lectures.

Life and Form

In celebration of Women’s month I styled a photo-shoot titled Life and Form directed by friend and fellow blogger onsaki.tumblr.com. You might recognize the garments used because most of them come from my very own wardrobe. I now see why girls love playing dress up with my clothes – because they look so good in them! The idea behind the shoot was to use authentic men’s clothes as a way of challenging the typical feminine androgynous wear which can be found in any retail store. Both Sakhi and I were determined to execute the looks that we had planned. However, as these things go there’s always a lot of impromptu involved at the actual event. Oh how I love styling and creating looks on the spot! Colour, form and depth were then used to add life to the shoot. It was amazing working with Sakhi as well as photographer cicification.blogspot.com and Gabrielle Pollock from bossmodels.co.za.

So be inspired to raid your brother’s/dad’s/boyfriend’s/husband’s wardrobe and show them how a real woman rocks an outfit! Heels and all.

From the hood

After hearing about the WOZA (wear only ZA) campaign a couple of weeks ago I became intrigued about what I could possibly do on a small scale that could work for the average student and possibly influence them to support the campaign. This, along with last week’s beautiful sunny weather that suddenly turned to rain made me think about how even the stylish student can buckle under the pressure of a bit of wind and rain, resulting in something that looks a bit like a beggar wearing a random piece of university attire. I cannot help but cringe when seeing a fellow Ikey out in public looking like this while wearing a UCT hoodie! Even though we were brainwashed by teachers and prefects to take pride in wearing our school uniforms, I think something positive can be taken from our schooling experiences. Why wouldn’t you want to wear your campus hoodie with pride instead of donning it only on laundry day when you have nothing else to wear? We sometimes forget that we are in the top percentage of individuals that are able to attend a world class academic institution. And all that crap about people not judging you by your appearance surely comes from the mouth of a Shlumpadinka (a word coined by Oprah to describe a frumpy person) who mopes around campus dragging his feet and walking with his head face-down. It’s time to reclaim that energy and excitement you had before you first arrived at varsity and it’s time to put some effort into the way you wear your campus hoodie!

The possibilities for this student staple are endless, it just takes a bit of time and effort to create a personalized look that will take you from campus creep to campus cool. So whether you’re a student or a graduate, take out that hoodie, give it a wash and have fun creating looks with items in your wardrobe. *Thanks to Adam and Mia for playing along and showing you how they gave their hoodies a new lease on life.
