Enter the Cave 12:18 AM
Welcome back tartlets! I trust that you have all started off the year with a bang and a knock to your credit cards with all the summer sales, holiday debt and trivial things like books and food. The good news is that while the sun is still out, your tan has not faded and everyone still seems to glow on Jammie steps, it’s the perfect time to dress up and try out new things. If you’re a fresher you’ll probably have no difficulty with this because your entire first year will be about exploration and growth. But for us golden oldies it is a bit more challenging to get out of the rut we might find ourselves in. That being said, there is no excuse for not looking after yourself. Many forget that being a student is more than just striving towards obtaining a degree, you are meant to grow in other non-academic ways too that will make you a well balanced employable individual. I believe it all starts with the first impression you make. So take some cues from the fresh meat on campus and play around – with your wardrobe that is!
Campus might still be all pretty with overgrown ivy and sun-kissed hotties, but I have however prepared well in advance for the times when I need to escape the doom and gloom of study periods by turning my room “space” into a “place”. I’ve always believed in the psychology of making my room as homely as possible, as a means of aiding the learning processes. After all it’s not normal to live in a room that resembles an empty cave. This year is slightly different though as I moved into UCT’s newest (and most fabulous) residence, Obz Square. Situated on main road this building houses more than 800 students, most of whom are post-graduates. Seeing that I’ve had my fair share of awkward moments in communal showers and dining halls, Obz square with its en-suite bathrooms and homely kitchens is the perfect environment for mature students to work and live in. Ok, so I might sound a bit like a brochure but I do realise that I am still in the honeymoon phase of switching dorms. I eagerly await the day when my berries go missing from the fridge or my glasses have been used. Exit bliss. Enter bitch. But for now I am simply basking in the delight of just having moved in and decorated my room. After three packs of prestic, two glue sticks and a whole lot of tape my little cave is ready to listen to all my stories and even share some of them with you! Here’s a view inside my home away from home:

Seasons 10:58 PM
I haven’t been blogging regularly since last season. I realize that now. Life and work is no excuse for ignoring my calling, but I occasionally do have to attend these silly things called lectures and tutorials, which I feel have been misleading me into a world filled with outgrown weaves and bookworm bitches who glare at me as I strut through the isles of the library looking for… wait… oh I forgot what I was looking for. So in the spirit of Spring I think its time we take a deep breath and realize that the frail brown ivy that hung on the buildings of Upper campus is now once again, beautifully green and creeping into summer. Although this may strike panic and anxiety due to the realization that you haven’t done much work (academic and soul searching) from the time Jammie Thursdays were still packed, this should spur you on to take charge and make things happen ‘for’ you instead of ‘to’ you. I have been lazy. Oh so very lazy. But that changes NOW! My post-Ramadan svelte self cannot go unnoticed; ya’ll know I staved myself for way too long!
So as Spring has officially sprung (forgetting the odd miserable rainy days in between) my look for this week is inspired by the clear skies and crisp morning air (in other words, I threw a whole lot of old shit together to create this look). I bought these denims at JayJay’s at the beginning of the year and one night after some academic slaving I grabbed a pair of scissors and ripped away. Ps. Youtube tutorials do help. I paired it with an Ashtray Electric T-shirt which was another victim to my state of scissor happiness. I layered a stripe T underneath to add a little peek-a-boo edge. My sandals were hand made by a leather artisan and they are my new summer go-to’s when I’ve had enough of flip flops. Being inspired to try new things this season, I decided to go lighter with my hair colour. When I started this blog I had a similar colour, except this time I said good-bye to the comfort zone bangs had created in my life. Step outside your crazy workload and just realize that the year is not over yet, we still have some time left to do the things we said we would do. If that doesn’t work, just call me and we can shop our sorrows away.
Thank-you to www.cicification.com for shooting these photographs after a long day of lectures.
